Pixel Density Calculator (PPI & DPI)
Calculate pixels per inch (PPI), dot pitch, and Retina viewing distance for desktop monitors, laptops, and smartphones. Or switch to print mode to compute the exact pixel resolution required for 300 DPI photo prints.
The Mathematics of Pixel Density
Screen PPI Formula
PPI = √(Width² + Height²) / Diagonal Inches
Calculates diagonal pixel count via the Pythagorean theorem, divided by screen diagonal in inches.
Pixel Pitch (Dot Pitch)
Dot Pitch (mm) = 25.4 / PPI
Distance from the center of one pixel to the center of the next adjacent pixel. Smaller dot pitch yields finer text.
Print Dimension Formula
Required Pixels = Physical Inches × Target DPI
To produce an 8″ × 10″ fine-art photo print at 300 DPI: 8 × 300 = 2400px wide, and 10 × 300 = 3000px high.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PPI and DPI?
PPI (Pixels Per Inch) measures digital display density—the number of individual electronic sub-pixels packed into an inch of screen. DPI (Dots Per Inch) refers strictly to physical printing—the physical density of ink droplets laid onto paper by a printing press or inkjet printer.
How is PPI calculated for screens?
Screen PPI is calculated using the Pythagorean theorem: calculate the diagonal resolution in pixels via √(width² + height²), and divide that diagonal pixel count by the diagonal physical screen size in inches.
Why is 300 DPI considered the standard for fine art and photo printing?
At typical reading distances (12 to 16 inches), the normal human eye with 20/20 vision can resolve details down to approximately 1/300th of an inch (approx 1 arcminute). Printing at 300 DPI ensures individual ink dots fuse into a continuous tone image.
What is Apple "Retina" display pixel density?
A Retina display is engineered so that at normal viewing distance, the human eye cannot distinguish individual pixels. For iPhones held at 10–12 inches, this requires >326–460 PPI. For MacBooks viewed at 20 inches, 220–254 PPI qualifies as Retina. For desktop monitors viewed at 28 inches, ~160–218 PPI achieves Retina clarity.
